Drug and alcohol use and abuse are not only adult problems, they also affect a significant number of teenagers. While drinking may be the only problem behavior for some teens, research suggests that for others it may be an expression of general adolescent turmoil that includes other problem behaviors. Teenagers may be involved with legal or illegal drugs in various ways because experimentation with drugs during adolescence is common. Unfortunately, teens do not often see the link between their actions today and the consequences of tomorrow.

Statistics show that teenagers who begin using drugs and alcohol at a young age increase the risk of use and abuse and are five times more likely to develop alcohol or drug dependence later. Some teens will experiment and stop, or continue to use occasionally, without serious problems. Others will develop a dependency or addiction, often moving on to more dangerous drugs and causing serious harm to themselves and possibly others. This is when drug rehab programs are necessary for recovery.

Drug and Alcohol dependence is also associated with several Mental Health Issues

Depression
Anxiety
Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
Antisocial personality disorder
Attempting and completing suicide.

Addiction changes things, It ruins relationships, disrupts families and destroys lives. When families are dealing with drug abuse in a family member, hope can sometimes seem far away. But, hope is powerful. Hope is realizing that change is possible. Relationships can be repaired and things will get better.
